Education as known for centuries

The debate on the adequacy of current educational system in our country is continuing for decades now. For school education, some people look westwards for inspiration, others claim that the age-old Gurukul system was the best and should be the basis of our future planning. There are still more differences of opinion on the question of higher education as the available models are numerous and the need to change is painfully apparent. Once we set our minds to solve this puzzle, many issues need to be addressed simultaneously. Firstly, we have to think of a sustainable model that will work in Indian conditions. Then, the model should provide for meeting the challenges of globalization. It should also foster and reward creativity. The system should not sacrifice the indigenous culture rather it should be promoted. Finally, the system should provide for the future livelihood of the learners.
